3DCA PETG filament separation

Hi everyone,

A 3D newbie here. Why does the PETG filament separate at post print layers or go spaghetti when previous prints hold strong and complete without issues.

The filament has been in used 3 days prior to my problems starting in my P1S AMS. All previous prints were great. AMS hygrometer shows 15% and internal temp at 30°C. I’ve tried prints on both textured PEI and Cool SuperTack plates. Bed adhesion is great with both plates. The problem still occurs in the material bonding after 5-10 layers. The pic shows the filament breaks at the print lines of both pieces. No strength after printing at all.

My PLA prints completed between the PETG printing come out great. No issues with them at all.

Any advise/help is greatly appreciated.

Hey fellow newbie.
I have no answer for you but I have just experienced something similar.
In my case the failure is a tool part that I have printed several times successfully. It’s quite strong. This time, not so much. First attempt spaghetti. Second attempt. The part looked fine, but on inspection it came apart in my hands at a layerline. Same filament, PETG, dried for 12 hours prior to print. Plate scrubbed with Dawn 3 times. Same filament file. I did modify the 3mf file slightly for this print. I tried using PLA as s support interface.
This adds a lot of time to the print so perhaps the cooling down time reduced layer adhesion? Another possibility is that there was some kind of contamination from the PLA? Not enough purge?

Hi John,

After a few more failed prints and lots of PLA spaghetti, I ended up having to replace the 0.4mm nozzle. I learned to do cold pulls through the nozzle, which helped. But there was a build up of PETG plastic inside the silicon cap and burned onto the nozzle tip. I suspect it caused a heat imbalance/disruption in the nozzle. After changing the nozzle (a first time for everything) my prints come out OKAY. Although I have not tried using the PETG filament through this replacement nozzle yet. Live and learn about the new tech everyday.

Cheers, JP

Hi,

Yes I have also experienced the so called “blob of death”. Good times!

Best, J.

Welcome to the forum and the “Joy of Printing”!

Follow-up to the layer adhesion issue with the Budget PETG. I ensured that the filament was dried to at least 10% relative humidity (RH). I also ensured that the RH in the printer case (P1S) and the room is below 50%. This has worked for the past week using several rolls of black, white and orange coloured Budget PETG, even when the outside environment RH was 100% raining.
