I printed out a new number plate for my house, thick black base with thinner top layers in copper coloured PLA. Both where PLA+ but different brands. I noticed that the plate now has a significant warp in it, outwards towards the thin top PLA layers. Is there a different coefficient of expansion between different types/brands of PLA filament???

Almost all brands, types of filament, and even colours will have some differences in expansion, but I think the main issue in your case is with PLA and the exposure to heat and UV.

In my experience, not all brands treat PLA+ the same. The “+” can mean a variety of things, so for some brands that could mean better heat resistance, while others could be faster print speeds, more colour pigment, stronger parts, or some combination of these (I’m sure there’s other features I’m missing too).

Either way, I wouldn’t recommend PLA/+. Instead I’d suggest something like PETG.

Better yet, you could go for ASA/ABS, but reminder these will require an enclosed printer with proper ventilation/filtration.

PETG/ASA/ABS will have better heat/UV resistance and have a lower chance to warp/degrade in the elements. As usual, most filaments other than PLA will need to be dried to get the best print results.

I printed out these PETG garden bed numbers a couple summers ago and they’re still holding up great!

Hope this helps!

I have printed many items for outdoor use in PLA and PLA+, many have been out in the weather for years and this is the first time I have seen any evidence or degradation. As you stated, different brands have varying properties so I think that is the problem. Thanks.

Copper colour or copper silk? Silk PLA is PLA mixed with TPU. It does all kinds of gyrations when it cools and expands. It also has layer adhesion issues. If it is a silk for certain.

I have also many outdoor items most are fine some are starting to be chalky and brittle but it’s been 10 years.

It’s just copper coloured PLA+
