Can Filament go bad?!

I have some filament from 2ish years ago that I have tried to use and every print fails. I’ve heard of too much moisture in filament being an issue but is it possible for filament to dry out?

It’ll absorb moisture the whole time its exposed. That’s usually what happens. Try drying it. Ive never had a roll that old though, at least any thats sat aroud the shop that long. Usually it gets brittle when its too wet if its pla. PETG will give very ugly prints when its wet.

It is PLA, how do you go about drying it out?

hi @Dread

There are a couple of ways to dry it out, The most straightforward is to use a filament drier, If you happen to have a food dehydrator that will do in a pinch as well. The desiccant bags are good but more to “maintain” lower moisture levels rather than drying it out.

Hope this helps

@Jason Jason has it. what’s needed is something enclosed that you can heat up but not too hot. like if your oven has 150°f setting for example you could keep the roll in there overnight and it should improve its ability to print. many ovens are too hot on it’s lowest settings though so be careful.

i dried rolls out for the local manshed at 140 in the oven over night

Thank you everyone for all the suggestions! I will definitely try out what I can.
