Looks like Peopoly is going to be selling their linear motors for use on DIY builds. Hopefully they offer more lengths in the future. Currently they only mention a 400mm length. Pretty cool that they’re open to offering the technology outside of just their printers.
I heard the machine was a flop and they are trying to sell these kits to recoup some of the costs involved in the launch. While it sounds like a good idea, I’d like to hear first hand feedback on whether or not it actually works well.
Standing by for reviews!
The machine was a good idea in theory, but was plagued with issues. For a first gen technology this is somewhat normal, my hope is that it will improve over the years. It is a really interesting idea!
That’s interesting. I didn’t know it had been a flop. I did look at some reviews shortly after its release, from what I remember, I thought the reviewers had generally good impressions of them, by and large. Maybe I am misremembering. I hope they can fix whatever issues it has and successfully market them. Looks like the concept has a lot of potential.
I think the reviewer impressions were sort of ‘This is really cool and I like it, but it still needs some work’. Which I think is completely reasonable for a first gen tech product, I think for how unique this product is they did a decent job all things considered. But ultimately the machine was still plagued with issues.
I think another big issue with this machine was that the benefit you got over a ‘normal’ printer was minimal, but there was a notable price difference. The Magneto X came in a an msrp of $2000 USD, for comparison an X1C with AMS is $1500 USD, a K1 Max is $900 USD and a Prusa MK4 was $1100 for the assembled kit.
I am very hopeful for the future of this tech, its a really good idea and the expandability is amazing. The thing that really excited me was idex, imagine having multiple extruders but not having to worry about multiple belts and steppers and such. Just throw the toolhead on and let er’ rip!
We will see where it goes I guess!
