Poor first layer and filament brand

I have been using one brand, one that is considered to be very good (be cool, no names) for the bulk of my basic printing and have been have very bad first layer problems. Not sticking to the bed sometimes the individual filament strings aren’t sticking together or to the bed and poor finish on the bottom (cavities some times large ones). I have been thinking that either there was something wrong with the printer or I was screwing up big time. So in the last view days I have been printing various other brands (Christmas stuff) of filaments including PLA+ and PLA silk. Guess what, very nice prints with good to excellent first layers.

Has anyone else had this problem.

I would imagine that, just like most manufactured products, no matter the brand, you can get the odd lot of bad product. I’ve seen it in a few brands of filament that I’ve bought. There was one in particular that was so bad I threw it in the garbage, yet I’ve had an owner of a print farm tell me that he uses the same brand exclusively.

I have had a few rolls of this stuff and I won’t buy anymore. I have been printing a lot recently and the other brands are fine to excellent. Life is to short to put up with crap.

Keeping your plate clean between prints, making sure the filament is dry, are important to getting that first layer adhesion just right. I always slow down my first layer to 30mm/s and use the outer brim for extra security to make sure that the first layer stays put. PETG and PLA also use different nozzle and bed temps so be sure your slicer is configured properly.

I do all those things and even use glue if I have a difficult print.

Poor filament seems to be the problem, but what is bad for one isn’t a problem for others and that can be a problem..

Yep I have seen this too Same printer and settings one good brand gave awful first layers while other PLA/PLA+ printed perfectly.Filament quality or batch issues are real moisture or formulation can absolutely mess with first-layer adhesion.

I rarely have issues in my experience it is poor calibration of flow or first layer, flow mostly, pressure advance on occasion, first layer is rare these days. I have had the same manufacturer same colour need to be re calibrated every so often. I sometimes need to run calibration colour by colour in the same brand dark and light and white by itself .
